Trump violated law by doing business in Cuba

Trump visited Miami's Little Havana on Wednesday to woo Cuban-Americans. Then sucked down a colada during an impromptu trip to the Calle Ocho landmark.

Although Donald Trump made clear in Monday's debate that he is against sending American business overseas, an exposé has suggested that his casino company paid $68,000 to Cuban businesses during the embargo in 1998. While being linked to Putin has caused issues for the billionaire real estate mogul, it's his alleged ties to Cuba and Fidel Castro that could cause campaign-ending panic, as reported by Newsweek, and highlighted on the September 28 edition of "The Rachel Maddow Show".

According to Politico, this new insight may also cause Trump to lose crucial Cuban-American votes in the swing state of Florida. This will hurt in Miami-Dade County.

The report said that the Trump company - then called Trump Hotels & Casino Resorts - "funneled" a minimum of $68,000 to a consulting firm that traveled to Cuba in 1998 for the goal of giving the company a foothold there if Washington loosened or lifted trade restrictions.

The report said the company did not spend the money directly.

The Newsweek report says Mr Trump's company funnelled the cash through a United States consulting firm to make it appear legal.

Just a few days ago, Trump sought the support of this community, strongly embracing tough measures against Castro. Maintain the embargo, and 2.

Generally speaking, the embargo and relevant sanctions prohibited USA citizens from conducting any business transactions with Cuba, at least without first obtaining a special license. Newsweek cited an anonymous former Trump executive who claimed that Trump had participated in discussions about the Cuba trip and knew it had taken place.

The article describes how Trump sent out feelers in 1998 to investigate the feasibility of building a casino in Cuba if then-President Bill Clinton lifted the decades-old trade embargo.

Firms that violate the embargo are typically fined.

"Trump's business with Cuba appears to have broken the law, flouted US foreign policy and is a complete contradiction to Trump's own repeated, public statements that he had been offered opportunities to invest in Cuba but passed them up", adviser Jake Sullivan said in a statement.

That piece didn't delve into Trump's company records and court filings.

Apparently rachel @maddow is going to break the findings of my latest investigative report on trump in about 10 minutes on @MSNBC.

The Newsweek story got immediate morning drive-time play on Miami's Spanish-language radio station. We'll update the post as more information becomes available.
