Marlins say Jose Fernandez killed in boating accident

Early on Sunday, it was reported that Fernandez had died in a boating accident on Miami Beach along with two others.

Elbow problems led to a round of Tommy John surgery at the end of 2015, but Fernandez showed his typical dominance again this year on a solid Marlins team, bringing him back to the All Star Game.

Maria Oliva said she spoke with Fernandez's mother numerous times at Marlins Park, while they watched her son play.

José Fernández announced his girlfriend, Carla Mendoza, was pregnant days before he was killed in a boating accident at age 24 in the early hours of Sunday, September 25.

The game will take place at Marlins Park at 7:10 p.m. ET against the New York Mets.

Fernandez died Sunday morning in a boating accident.

When first responders arrived on the scene, they found two victims under the boat and one in the water nearby, said Lorenzo Veloz, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission spokesman.

It is unknown who was driving the boat when it crashed.

"The jetty is [made of] rocks and not very visible but the vessel has traveled through this area previously", Veloz said.

Veloz further said that the group may have been speeding because of the way the boat struck the jetty.

Although many details of the crash are still under investigation, speed is likely to have been a factor in the crash, although drugs and alcohol did not appear to play a role, Veloz said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this hard time". Reyes said two bodies were found underneath the vessel and another was found in the water on the southside of the jettys. "Somehow we've got to overcome that". He received the National League Rookie of the Year award in 2013 and has been an All-Star player for two times.

Fernandez became a US citizen previous year and was enormously popular in Miami thanks to his success and exuberant flair.

"When I first saw him, I knew he was special", Faedo said.

"When I think about Josie, it's going to be thinking about a little kid", said Mattingly, pausing repeatedly to compose himself. "He played with the joy of a Little Leaguer".

Mattingly then wiped away tears, and he wasn't alone.
