Government forces gain ground near Aleppo

Rescuers pull a baby from rubble, unsure whether the child will survive. None of her family were thought to have survived the attack.

Government forces captured the rebel-held Palestinian refugee camp of Handarat as airstrikes pounded rebel-held eastern neighborhoods of Aleppo, killing at least 25 people, according to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The intensity of the bombardment, which included artillery barrages and barrel bombings by helicopters, brought new misery to the estimated 250,000 civilians besieged by the army.

Speaking after a meeting of the International Syria Support Group (ISSG) on Thursday, US Secretary of State John Kerry said he was determined to restore the ceasefire, calling on the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his ally Russian Federation to "do their part" to ease the suffering of the Syrian people.

The head of a hospital in the rebel-held east told Reuters news agency that 91 people had been killed in Friday's bombardment.

"We are trying to see by all means available how we can reach east Aleppo", Jens Laerke, spokesman for the United Nations humanitarian agency OCHA, told reporters in Geneva.

He blamed Washington for the failure of the latest peace effort, saying responsibility for lack of success in separating the "so-called moderate opposition from terrorists. lies with the US and members of the USA -led coalition".

When the U.S. -Russia brokered truce went into effect in Syria on September 12, calm prevailed Aleppo and other Syrian cities, but the violence renewed after the truce expired this Monday.

On elevated ground, it overlooks one of the main roads into Aleppo where residents of the rebel-held half say warplanes have unleashed unprecedented firepower.

Medical charity Doctors Without Borders (MSF), which supports hospitals in Aleppo, said the city's residents "already suffocating under the effects of the siege, have yet again come under horrific attack".

He said the bombing targeted two civil defence centres, putting one out of service.

The White Helmets posted photos on Twitter showing piles of rubble and shattered rescue vehicles.

Rescue workers told AFP their stock of diesel was down to 2,000 litres (530 gallons), forcing them to ration fuel and make choices on when to intervene.

The statement urged the civilians to stay away from the positions of the rebel groups.

A Western diplomat speaking to a group of journalists in Beirut said that in NY, the impression from meeting with the Russians was that there is no new offensive, but there are been some mixed messages from the ground.

Fresh strikes were reported in the city on Saturday, as the Syrian army pressed on with its push to retake rebel areas.

Mr Lavrov said that if the location of militants of the Nusra Front could be pinpointed, he remained convinced a cessation of hostilities and a delivery of humanitarian aid would be possible.
