Houston officials: Shooting suspect was lawyer

UPDATE: 11:08 a.m. EDT - Houston city officials said the threat of a mass shooting was over Monday morning after a gunman left nine people shot and wounded, one critically, near a shopping mall.

Seven more people were treated for injures in hospital.

Police shot the shooter and there were no reports of other suspects, the Houston police department said on its Twitter account.

Some witnesses have described the gunman firing dozens of shots at cars passing through the neighborhood before he was engaged by police.

Broken glass from shattered auto windows littered a vehicle park in an upscale shopping centre near where the suspect fired 20 to 30 shots.

Jennifer Molleda's husband was among those hurt by glass. The suspected shooter, a 20-year-old Turkish immigrant and legal permanent USA resident, was captured by police on Saturday night.

McDaniel says that he didn't know DeSai to pull a gun on anyone and that descriptions of him having "issues" were "amazing".

"We are bringing in the bomb squad to secure it", she said.

Nine people were injured in the shooting, police said. He managed to flee and escape injury. Montalvo said one person was hospitalized in critical condition and another in serious condition.

DeSai was a lone gunman who was disgruntled over matters at the law firm where he worked, according to the mayor, who said he'd been briefed on the shooting by police.

"The investigation is active".

A man has been shot at the scene of a shoot-out in which at least seven people have been injured.

Witness Antoine Wilson told the TV station he was briefly caught in the crossfire of shooting involving officers and the suspect. "We received a call at 6:29 that we had a shooting at the Petco store.the first units were directed to the parking lot where the shooting was still active", HFD's Jay Evans says. He was later identified as Nathan Desai, 46, a local attorney who recently formed his own law practice.

"As victims of the Houston shooting fight for their lives this morning, Cecilia and I ask that all Texans join us in keeping them in your thoughts and prayers". The suspect was shot dead by local police, who later confirmed that he was a lawyer.
