Canadiens Shaw to face hearing with National Hockey League after boarding Caps' Hobbs

Shaw was handed a five-minute boarding penalty as well as a fighting major, a misconduct and a game misconduct.

"It definitely didn't have as much flow as [Monday] night", says Walker, who skated in both of Washington's first two exhibition games in as many nights.

Vying for a place on the Washington Capitals roster, Walker took exception to a vicious hit the two-time Stanley Cup victor put on one of his teammates, so he challenged Shaw to a slug-fest.

The Russian, who signed a one-year contract with Montreal in the off-season, got the blade of his stick on Pateryn's shot from the point to deflect the puck past Vanecek. The two-time Stanley Cup victor has quite a bit more experience when it comes to dropping the gloves compared to Walker, who has not yet suited up in a National Hockey League regular-season game.

Montreal finished 2 for 6 with the man advantage.

It all started with a bad hit on Capitals prospect Connor Hobbs, whose back was turned to Shaw the entire time.

Next, as a result of the hit, Shaw and Nathan Walker chose to drop the gloves. "I don't think that was a clean hit by any means and so I stuck up for Hobbs".

Mitchell scored at 16:13 of the second to extend the Montreal lead to 4-1, scoring just as Caps winger Nathan Walker exited the penalty box. The 31-year-old added his second of the evening late in the third period to put the game out of Washington's reach.

Marcus Johansson and Zachary Sanford scored for Washington (0-1-1) while Vitek Vanecek stopped 24-of-29 shots.
