Syria army claims shooting down 2 Israeli planes

The Syrian military said the warplane was shot down southwest of al-Quneitra, while the drone was downed west of the town of SaaSaa.

The incident comes shortly after the 48-hour ceasefire, brokered by Russian Federation and the U.S., was set in Syria.

The statement says the incident occurred at 1:30 a.m. local time Tuesday (6:30 p.m. ET Monday).

The previous retaliation for errant fire took place on Saturday when Israeli aircraft struck Syrian positions.

The IDF made clear that no aircraft or drone was shot down in Syria but they did state that anti-aircraft shots were fired at the planes attacking Syrian positions.

It "at no point" compromised pilot safety, Israel said.

Press TV: Indeed and then obviously we have all those foreign players in Syria as well, I wonder how many of them do you think are cooperating with the Israelis when it comes to their individual interests there? A military spokeswoman said Tuesday's strike was the fourth retaliation since September 4.

Israeli warplanes have conducted several raids on Syrian army positions over the past weeks after stray shells hit the Israeli-controlled Golan.

It said a Syrian anti-aircraft battery had shot at an aircraft but failed to hit it.

The conflict between Israel and Syria in the Golan Heights dates back to the Six-Day War in 1967. "No injuries have been reported". Still, Israel responded to the mortar shell with an airstrike on Syrian artillery. According to the IDF, two Syrian missiles targeted their aircraft, but both missed.
