Froome wins Vuelta time trial to reduce Quintana's lead

Alberto Contador (Tinkoff), who finished nearly two minutes behind Froome, is now third overall while Esteban Chaves (Orica-Bike Exchange) slipped down to fourth after losing over three minutes.

Froome had started the day with high hopes of overhauling Quintana after pulling over two minutes back on his rival during the individual time trial stage on Friday.

The 35-year-old is enjoying an Indian Summer in terms of his career with stage wins this year on four major races including the Criterium du Dauphine and the Tour de France.

'I've had to learn a lot very quickly from figures like Contador, ' Quintana told Marca.

He said: "There is still one more day of tough racing tomorrow".

"Froome was flying", Quintana said. "The long time trial is a one-on-one fight, and we have to defend ourselves well". Let's see. Of course Quintana still has more than one minute of an advantage.

"We'll see (what happens) tomorrow and I'll speak with my team-mates tonight".

"We saw the same with Jens Keuekeleire on stage 12, and today it was my turn to give it a go, and it was really awesome".

The men behind him - Tom Dumoulin (Giant-Alpecin) and Rohan Dennis (BMC) at 49sec and 51sec respectively - are two of the world's best time triallists. The Briton continued to crush the pedals and clocked 31min 08sec at the second intermediate point, leading Contador by 1min 12sec, Quintana by 1min 33sec and Chaves by a massive 2min 14sec.

"My team defended all the attacks of the other teams, above all (Froome's) Sky", Quintana said.

Barring an accident or incident on the final stage's traditional arrival in Madrid, Movistar's Colombian climber will add the Vuelta to his Giro d'Italia title won in 2014.

Andrew Talansky (Cannondale-Drapac) moved ahead of British rider Simon Yates into the top five.

Stage 19 was the penultimate stage of the Vuelta a Espana - a rolling time trial of 37km from Chabia to Calpe.
