Twitter's longer tweets go into effect on September 19th

Today's report cites a "source familiar with the company's business", though Twitter itself would declined to comment on the rumored date.

The 140-character limited was initially put in place to allow users to post via text messages when the service first launched in 2006 as text messages have a 160-character limit.

Earlier this year, Twitter announced that it was planning to move away from the strict 140-character limit for tweets. Rather than expand the limit at risk of losing users who enjoy the short updates which Twitter provides; the social media giant has made a decision to change what counts towards its limit.

Back in May, Twitter revealed they were changing the way their tweet character limit worked.

Dorsey later said the 140 character limit was a "beautiful constraint" that "inspires creativity and brevity", and admitted that the majority of tweets "will always be short and sweet and conversational". Usernames, when they're at the beginning of replies, will also no longer count which should reduce your annoyance of that contact with the extra long handle.

Twitter gives you 140 characters to say whatever it is you need to say. Thanks to this change, though, users will now be able to express themselves without worrying about images, GIFs or other kinds of media counting towards the character limit.
