Trial of SS Medic Who Served at Auschwitz Begins in Germany

The court heard that Hubert Zafke, a retired farmer reportedly suffered from stress, high blood pressure and suicidal thoughts, but Judge Klas Kabisch made a decision to proceed with the case on Monday after a doctor determined that Zafke was fit to attend court.

Hubert Zafke appeared in court in Neubrandenburg in north-eastern Germany accused of assisting in the killing of 3,681 people at the Auschwitz death camp.

He was pushed into Neubrandenburg state court in a wheelchair on Monday, holding a wooden cane in his hand.

The trial has been postponed three times over health concerns related to the defendant, whose medical reports detail high blood pressure and suicidal thoughts.

The question of whether Mr Zafke is fit to stand trial was also due to be addressed again by the court next week.

"Fitness to stand trial is an imperative according to the rule of law", Kabisch told the court. A court spokesman said it is not clear how long it will take for the motions to be resolved.

She was charged with 260,000 counts of accessory to murder connected to her work at the Nazi concentration camp as the radio operator of the commandant there. She died in another camp, at Bergen-Belsen, shortly before it was liberated by the British Army in 1945.

Prosecutors allege that Mr Zafke's unit was involved in putting gas into gas chambers to kill Jews and others, screening blood and other samples from hospitalised women prisoners, and helping the camp run by treating SS guard personnel.

Zafke denied those charges, arguing that he only treated wounded soldiers and members of the Schutzstaffel (SS), a paramilitary organization under Adolf Hilter and the National Socialist German Worker's Party in Nazi Germany.
