'Saturday Night Live' adds 3 players for its 42nd season

On Monday (Sept. 12), "SNL" announced on Twitter the three new additions to their cast will be Mikey Day, Alex Moffat and Melissa Villaseñor.

The comedy pipeline that ranges from Chicago improv training grounds to Saturday Night Live is a familiar one, stretching back to the days when a young Bill Murray graduated from The Second City to SNL.

Day has been a writer on the series since 2013, but this will be his first season as a featured player.

Ariana Grande chats with Jimmy about incorporating spinning in her MTV Video Music Award performance, her next tour and joining NBC's Hairspray Live! cast as Penny Pingleton.

And last but not least, Melissa Villaseñor is breaking new ground as the only the second woman of Latina descent to ever be cast on "Saturday Night Live".

The fresh faces come after SNL announced the departures of veterans Taran Killam and Jay Pharoah, as well as newcomer Jon Rudnitsky for the upcoming season. We know that she is a good impressionist, having appeared many years ago on "America's Got Talent".

No word on whether Chris Redd will also join the cast.

Only time will tell which of these three, if any, will make their mark on the long-running show, which is known for creating stars and cautionary tales alike. Day also wrote and appeared in NBC's sketch comedy pilot "Maya & Marty" this summer.

They'll debut when the NBC sketch show returns on October 1. He also co-starred in the film "Uncle John", which debuted at South by Southwest past year. Villaseñor has also lent her talented voice on Adventure Time and Family Guy.
