Israel's Shimon Peres hospitalized after stroke

A spokeswoman for Shimon Peres says the former Israeli president has suffered a stroke and been rushed to a hospital. It initially said he was conscious and in stable condition, but later confirmed reports that he was sedated and on a respirator, saying his doctors had decided on this course of action as it made diagnosis and treatment more straightforward. The official spoke on condition of anonymity pending a formal announcement.

Sources close to the Peres family said Tuesday night that his life was "in danger" due to bleeding on the brain. It said people were gathering at the Western Wall, Judaism's holiest prayer site, to pray for his health.

Peres successfully underwent minor surgery at Tel HaShomer Hospital in January.

Peres was elected to the Knesset in November 1959 and, except for a three-month-long hiatus in early 2006, served continuously until 2007, when he became President. Peres served twice as the Prime Minister of Israel and twice as Interim Prime Minister, and he was a member of 12 cabinets in a political career spanning over 66 years.

He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1994 with Yasser Arafat and Yitzhak Rabin for their efforts to create peace in the Middle East. As president, a largely ceremonial office, he cultivated an image as the country's elder statesman and became a popular fixture at worldwide conferences like the World Economic Forum in Davos.

One of the most influential leaders in Israel's 67-year history, Peres stepped down as president in 2014 after completing a seven-year term.

The 93-year-old former president, prime minister and Nobel peace laureate suffered what Channel 1 described as "a massive intracranial hemorrhage" earlier on Tuesday.
