Yahoo! (YHOO) Stock Rises in After-Hours Trading as Verizon Explores Deal

Verizon appears serious about bringing the 1 billion users who use Yahoo's e-mail, video and sports sites, and finance portals into the fold.

Tim Armstrong, CEO of Verizon subsidiary AOL, is now in charge of a potential acquisition of the old tech giant's assets, according to a report from Bloomberg today. By sending Tim Armstrong to steer talks, Verizon is clearly betting on the relationship between him and Marissa Mayer, CEO of Yahoo. If it can maintain offering the video streaming platform as a data-neutral service and gain access to Yahoo's customers, it could potentially challenge YouTube and Facebook in terms of mobile video advertising.

The dark satanic rumour mill has manufactured a hell on earth yarn claiming that the USA telco Verizon is thinking of buying the very troubled search outfit Yahoo. To continue the momentum, McAdam said it "might make some sense" to add pieces of newly acquired Millennial Media and potentially Yahoo into the mix. The two are both former Google executives. He has known Ms. Mayer for years.

With the blessing of Verizon CEO Lowell McAdam, Mr. Armstrong runs AOL as a semi-autonomous media and advertising business. Armstrong also played a key role in helping AOL acquire TechCrunch and The Huffington Post. Activist investors such as Starboard Value LP are pushing for a sale, among other changes.

I think their board is being very responsible in how they're doing this, very deliberately, very logically", McAdam said in an interview with Jim Cramer on CNBC's Mad Money. "We have to understand the trends that we're seeing in their results now, but then at the right price I think marrying up some of their assets with AOL and the leadership would be good".
