Hoax tricks Apple product users to change date to 1970

Feb 14, 2016, 07:36

First, it was the CrashSafari bug, then came the Apple manufactured Error 53, and now there is this 'time bug'.

iPhone users probably aren't aware, but by setting it to a specific date, you can actually kill your device.

Warning- Do not set your iPhone clock to January 1, 1970.

Donnie Yen Replaces Jet Li in 'XXX 3'
Filming on xXx: The Return of Xander Cage is underway in Toronto with additional shooting set for the Dominican Republic. Rather mysteriously though, sources close to Twitch Film revealed that Jet Li left the project for undisclosed reasons.

When the date of a 64-bit iOS device is set to January 1, 1970, the device will fail to boot.

A bug has been discovered on iPhones, iPads, and iPod touches with operating systems 8.0 and up, causing the devices to crash when they are manually set to the oldest date possible. To make a long story short, Unix tells time by counting every second that has elapsed since 00:00:00 UTC, January 1, 1970.

But, why will it render iPhone useless?

Warriors win as battle of National Basketball Association best and worst goes to wire
McCollum and Damian Lillard scored 21 points apiece, and the Trail Blazers handed the Timberwolves their 11th straight road loss. After Harrison Barnes bailed them out, the Warriors will try for a better performance Sunday night against the New York Knicks.

Now, why would scrolling all the way back to January 1, 1970 (00:00:00 in Unix time) turn your iPhone into a brick? Though Unix time can be negative, possibility exist that something related to the time zones is crashing the iPhone.

There is a new hoax going around that could break your iPhone for good. Perhaps it was some Apple engineer throwing in his idea of a joke thinking no one would even think about doing this. But don't fall for the recent claims for one hidden in your iPhone: if you attempt it, you'll brick your device.
