Health officials confirm pregnant woman in Victoria diagnosed with the Zika virus

A pregnant woman in Australia has tested positive for the Zika virus after traveling overseas. Those thought to have been infected could then have ultrasound scans to monitor their fetus' development.

About one in five people infected with the virus actually exhibit symptoms, which, according to the CDC, has caused many cases of the virus go on undetected.

The diagnosis is not a public health risk, as the virus does not transmit from person to person and is not believed to be present in native mosquitoes. Cases have also been identified in Europe and there were reports Wednesday that a case had been confirmed in China.

Arrival of this virus in some countries of the Americas, notably Brazil, has however changed this and its circulation is now associated with a steep increase in the birth of babies with abnormally small heads named scientifically as Microcephalia.
