Snow, freezing rain, and sleet possible Sunday

Clouds will likely keep temperatures above freezing from Rome to Atlanta and points southward on Monday, so the morning hours will likely feature light rain or drizzle. This is bringing the coldest temperatures of the winter so far to the Northeast this weekend.

Except for a few, isolated valley locations where cold air may get trapped longer, such as the Shenandoah Valley, most of these areas are expected to see temperatures rise near or slightly above freezing, also mitigating the effects of any freezing rain or sleet that would fall. When we have a little punch of warm air in the mid-levels, snow partially melts but re-freezes. West and north of the city, especially west and north of the Beltway, is where the biggest forecast uncertainty lies.

The Charlotte area has been placed under a WINTER STORM WATCH for late Sunday night into Monday evening.

We see two main scenarios as still on the table for this storm...

Timing: Noon Sunday until 6 am cst Monday - Snow could whiten the ground over northwestern Middle Tennessee by mid-morning, with afternoon accumulations of 1 to 3 inches possible over much of the north (generally along and north of I-40). Snow accumulation should remain limited to under an inch.

Saturday night will be even colder with lows near 12.
