Automakers add to air bag recalls

Costs are mounting for the largest consumer-safety recall in US history, as automakers replace the Japanese supplier's inflators that can deploy with too much force, spraying shrapnel at passengers.

Problems with Takata airbags were first reported in 2009.

Announcing the latest Takata-airbag recall on Wednesday, VW said that it is recalling 850,000 vehicles in the U.S.; while BMW said that it latest recall affects almost 840,000 vehicles in the country.

"The Takata recall has been really long and drawn out and there's been a lot of confusion - it's been unclear exactly which models", said Rebecca Lindland, a senior analyst at vehicle research firm Kelley Blue Book. It also includes 2007-2014 Sprinter and Freightliner vans.

The Commissioner sent out an email to Directors of Schools this morning encouraging schools with problems to discontinue testing. The issue quickly was resolved, with students beginning the assessments at approximately 10:30 a.m., Doddridge continued.

Daimler said it was unaware of airbag failures in its vehicles, and that the numbers of vehicles involved in the recall could fall once further technical studies finished. The action brings the total vehicles to be recalled for the Takata airbag defect to more than 21 million. It will account for this by revising its 2015 financial results published last week, lowering net profit to 8.7 billion euros and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) to 13.2 billion euros, from 8.9 billion and 13.5 billion euros respectively.

VW said its USA recalls include 2006 to 2010 model year Passat sedans and wagons made in Germany, 2012-2014 Eos as well as Passats made in the U.S., 2010-2014 Golf and Jetta SportWagen, and 2009-2014 Volkswagen CC.

The bad news is that Volkswagen doesn't yet have enough replacement parts to carry out a full recall. It would comment once it had reached clear conclusions.

The recall covers BMW cars and SUVs from model years 2006 to 2015.

Earlier, Honda Motor Co recalled 2.23 million U.S. vehicles in the most recent Takata expansion.

Volkswagen said it will recall 680,000 vehicles in the US over concerns with driver-side airbags that use non-desiccated SDI and PSDI-5 inflators from Takata.

Another 136,000 Daimler-built vans in the USA also will be recalled.
