Two Louisiana police officers wounded during shootout

The two officers were involved in a vehicle pursuit when the shooter wrecked his auto, got out of it with a "long gun" and fired at the officers who returned fire. Both officers were hit but were able to return fire and strike Smith.

Two Louisiana cops were injured early Saturday during a vehicle chase and shootout with a suspect, police said.

Police officers who were shot early Saturday during a confrontation with a suspect were responding to a call about someone damaging property.

"Everything is still preliminary, and we're still working the scene", Dabadie said. Chambers said Smith received mental health treatment previous year at a hospital in Shreveport, where he had been living with a sister.

McCollum and Damian Lillard scored 21 points apiece, and the Trail Blazers handed the Timberwolves their 11th straight road loss. After Harrison Barnes bailed them out, the Warriors will try for a better performance Sunday night against the New York Knicks.

Officials at the Baton Rouge Police Department could not be reached for immediate comment. "There is evidence that points in that direction as a possibility", Moore said about the suspect's reasoning for pulling out a gun on officers.

"Both of these officers were very fortunate to survive this encounter", Moore said. The suspect is undergoing surgery at the same area hospital.

Hope Walker, who says she's a friend of the suspect shot this morning, said she heard two sets of gunshots around 5:45 a.m. She was staying with a friend down the street when she heard three gunshots, Walker said. A bullet grazed the head of one officer; the other officer was hit in the stomach but protected by his bulletproof vest.

Records show Smith was arrested in Baton Rouge in July 2013 on sexual battery and contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile after he was accused of having sex with a 13-year-old girl whose mother had reported her missing.

But he could still overcome the gaffe, Caputo said . "If he has additional ones, it will be hard , if not impossible, to recover". This is bad news for a candidate who remains unpopular among many Republicans and appeared vulnerable to negative ads in Iowa.

Chambers says Smith, the son of her godmother, has been living with her since December. The suspect was on a tirade, tearing apart a vehicle in the driveway and became in a violent altercation with the mom's boyfriend, a source close to the investigation said. At least one officer was wearing a body camera.

The chase ended at Chambers' home.

Police shootings have drawn wide notice in recent months. He says all he heard was "sirens, gunshots and tires squealing".
