Fighting in Central African Republic kills at least 20

Six people were killed last week in Central African Republic in fighting between rival armed groups, the country's United Nations peacekeeping mission and the government said on Monday, revising down an earlier toll.

Rebels from the former Seleka group attacked the village of Ndomete, about 220 miles north of the capital city of Bangui, at 8 p.m. and went door-to-door killing Christians, a source in neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo told Morning Star News.

"There were 26 victims". The Seleka [rebels] went door to door. "The village chief was among the victims ..." "It was a massacre".

The government called for calm, and said that it was deploying forces with the United Nations peacekeeping mission.

It confirmed the violence and looting in the wake of tensions between Seleka fighters and rival anti-Balaka militia members, but declined to give a death toll. In a statement, MONUSCO said it had sent troop reinforcements to Kaga Bandoro and the village of Ndomete, which was particularly affected by the violence, "to prevent any deterioration of the situation".

Central African Republic, which holds reserves of uranium, gold and diamonds, suffered the biggest crisis in its half-century of independence in early 2013 when Seleka toppled then-President Francois Bozize.

Christian militias reacted by engaging in large-scale attacks against the minority Muslims.

In February, the former prime minister Faustin-Archange Touadera was elected president, bringing hope that political and religious conflict would subside. However, rebels and fighters still stalk much of the country outside the capital.
