Rami Malek picks up 'Mr. Robot' Emmy, honouring outcasts everywhere

"Please tell me you're seeing this, too", Malek joked when he took the stage to a roar laughter and applause.

"I play a young man who I think, like so many of us, is profoundly alienated", said Malek in his Emmy acceptance speech Sunday.

Biting political satire "Veep" is seeking its second consecutive best comedy series award, and bleak political drama "House of Cards" is looking for its first major win, as are its stars, Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright.

"For me to stand here as not the typical leading man and to have come home with this speaks a lot about where we're headed", he said.

Born in 1981 in Los Angeles, California, USA, to Egyptian parents, Malak graduated from the University of Evansville, USA. He went to Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks, California - graduating in 1999 along with fellow actor Rachel Bilson. The clearly shocked Mr. Robot star got off to a good start by channeling Elliot Alderson in a terrific reference that a surprising number of attendees (especially The Americans' Matthew Rhys) understood.

Malek's career saw him playing small or medium roles in films such the "Night at the Museum" series, "The Master", "Larry Crowne" and "Short Term 12". He also won a Golden Globe for this role earlier this year. Women earned two of the three directing trophies: Susanne Bier, for AMC's limited series The Night Manager; and Jill Soloway, who memorably called to "topple the patriarchy" while accepting the comedy directing Emmy for Amazon's Transparent. The ceremony airs 8 p.m. EDT Sunday on ABC with host Jimmy Kimmel.

He's right: We probably wouldn't hang out with Elliot in real life. Among them is "How to Get Away with Murder" star Viola Davis, who previous year became the first woman of color to be honored as best drama series actress. She revealed later that it was also going off during her speech.
