OR loses WR Devon Allen for season with injured knee

Allen, the OR wide receiver who moonlights as a world-class Olympic hurdler, is likely out for the season after suffering an injury that is feared to be a second torn ACL.

The junior went down on a special teams play during his team's Week 3 loss to Nebraska.

That successful Olympic debut led Allen to look into a career in track, even investigating along with the OR compliance department how he could run professionally while maintaining his college eligibility.

Allen returned for his junior season of football at OR less than a week after finishing fifth in the 110-meter hurdles final at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics.

He was taken out of the game and didn't return.

"We don't have any confirmations, which obviously is not a good thing", Helfrich said Sunday. "We've got some preliminary stuff, but nothing concrete".

The injury is a cruel blow for the talented 21-year-old who in Rio talked about the possibility of pursuing a National Football League career while continuing to compete in elite track and field. (Allen) could be great on the track for a long time. Allen injured his right knee during the 2015 Rose bowl.

This isn't the first serious leg injury he has suffered, either. And that stubbornness is going to cost him dearly one day, if it hasn't already.

It is unclear yet whether Allen will continue to play football after this latest reported injury.
