After bombings, Trump, Clinton target each other

Sep 20, 2016, 05:10

Hillary Clinton on Monday reaffirmed that she won't adopt Donald Trump's plan to ban Muslim immigrants after the apparent terrorist attacks in New York, New Jersey and Minnesota over the weekend, saying Trump's plan only makes the threat of terrorism worse.

Clinton warned Americans not to get "distracted" by Trump's "irresponsible, reckless rhetoric" after weekend attacks involving explosives in three cities in NY and New Jersey, as well as the stabbing of nine people in a Minnesota mall. "We're going to have to be very tough", Mr Trump told Fox News Channel.

That was less than an hour after the explosion and before authorities had publicly said so.

Pointing to her Monday morning comment that Trump's words give "aid and comfort" to Islamic extremists, his campaign said Clinton was accusing him of treason, going beyond the bounds of acceptable campaigning and trying to change the subject from her own failures.

On Friday, Trump said at a campaign rally that Clinton's "bodyguards should drop all weapons".

U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton is joined by her running mate, vice-presidential candidate and U.S. Senator Tim Kaine, during a campaign stop at the 11th Congressional District Labor Day Parade and Festival in Cleveland, Ohio, United States September 5, 2016.

On the campaign trail, she frequently invokes her role in the 2011 raid that killed Osama bin Laden, describing to voters the tense atmosphere in the White House alongside President Barack Obama.

"We also know from the former head of our counterterrorism center, Matt Olsen, that the kinds of rhetoric and language that Mr. Trump has used is giving aid and comfort to our adversaries", Clinton added. As a society we still grapple with what it means to see powerful women. "So let's not get diverted and distracted by the kind of campaign rhetoric we hear coming from the other side". On Sunday, Islamic State claimed responsibility, calling the man "a soldier", and the Federal Bureau of Investigation said it was investigating the attack as a potential act of terrorism. Trump's campaign responded to Clinton's criticisms, saying they are "an attempt to distract from her terrible record on ISIS".

In a statement, Trump's campaign accused the White House of playing down the threat posed by Islamic State.

"We're going after the bad guys and we're going to get them, but we're not going to go after an entire religion", Mrs Clinton said.

Hillary Clinton spoke at a rally at Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The leaders are in NY for the UN General Assembly. Trump and his allies spent Sunday - repeatedly and falsely - accusing Clinton of pushing the idea that President Obama was not born in the USA - a conspiracy theory long championed by Trump himself.

Police released a photo of a 28-year-old immigrant wanted for questioning in the blasts.

Mrs Clinton, meanwhile, is still facing questions about her health and openness after a video caught her staggering after abruptly leaving a 9/11 ceremony.
