Wildfire at California Air Force base explodes in size

Almost 800 firefighters were deployed to corral the fire when it broke out Sunday in a remote canyon.

If you are in an evacuation warning zone, firefighters say it's time to get your important belongings together in case of an evacuation order.

The fire is burning in the canyon between Arguello and Santa Ynez Ridge Roads at the base north of Santa Barbara.

No structures have been damaged, but 400 residents in San Miguelito Canyon received evacuation orders.

VAFB firefighters were assisted by crews from the Santa Barbara County Fire Department, which sent several engines, bulldozers, a hand crew and an Air Support Unit helicopter.

By 11 a.m. Sunday, it had grown to 500 acres, and by early afternoon it exceeded 1,200 acres.

Zaniboni said fire officials have requested additional help to fight the fire.

All others should contact their supervisory chain for reporting instructions, the spokesman said.

The Atlas V rocket was scheduled to take off Sunday and carry a commercial satellite, WorldView-4, which snaps high-resolution images of Earth. The fire burning in a remote canyon didn't immediately threaten the space launch complex, Col. Paul Nosek said on the base's Facebook page.

WorldView 4 is the latest in a series of imaging satellites built by Lockheed Martin and created to produce high-resolution images of Earth.

The United Launch Alliance, a joint venture between Lockheed Martin Space Systems and Boeing Defense, Space and Security, plans to launch the rocket from Vandenberg's Space Launch Complex 3.

Officials said the satellite will be able to spot the make of a auto from almost 400 miles above Earth.
