Will politics, social issues influence Emmy Awards outcome?

The HBO fantasy drama has so far clocked up 35 wins over six series - picking up nine wins at last weekend's Creative Arts Emmys, which encompasses numerous technical awards - already making it the biggest-winning dramas series of all time.

All men must die. (Though The Americans' Matthew Rhys winning isn't impossible.) Meanwhile Taraji P. Henson could win her first Emmy for her role as Cookie on Empire-unless Viola Davis nabs the award for the second year in a row for How to Get Away With Murder. This is an exciting year for the awards with Game of Thrones being the popular choice to sweep most categories.

Game of Thrones' network, HBO, has a typically strong Emmy slate overall; it boasts the most nominees of any network with 94, including 17 for its comedy Veep.

But Headey might be hampered by having to split the "Game of Thrones" vote at the Television Academy with her fellow cast members. The series has already passed The West Wing and Hill Street Blues but the next step is likely to be more hard to achieve. The actor and former beau of pop star Taylor Swift is up for an Emmy for his role in "The Night Manager". How numerous 23 nominations will Game of Thrones win? Mr. Robot, House of Cards, Downton Abbey and Game of Thrones will all be vying for Outstanding Drama. Please note, you may be surprised! It looks to be an absolute lock, although Fargo (+200) and American Crime (+600) were also able to turn some heads and garner a few other major nominations in the process.

Biting political satire "Veep" is seeking its second consecutive best comedy series award, with the edgy sitcom "black-ish" among its competitors.

The most star-studded category is perhaps lead actor in a limited series or TV movie, which includes six-time Emmy victor Bryan Cranston, who has received rave reviews for anchoring HBO's Lyndon B. Johnson biopic "All the Way".

The award show proper will begin at 8:00 p.m. EST.

The Jimmy Kimmel-hosted event is airing live today on ABC at 4:00 PM Pacific time.

Malek is also up against Oscar victor Kevin Spacey, who has never won an Emmy, in his role as manipulative President Frank Underwood in the Netflix Washington drama "House of Cards". With each passing year, TV's long-established incumbents cede more ground to tech-industry companies like Amazon and Netflix. The series was so successful that it was nearly immediately signed to a second season and lead actor Rami Malek was also nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama as well. Take, for example, ABC's official site - which will allow you to start watching their own pre-show Emmy special starting at around 7:00 p.m.

In the battle of the networks, perennial favourite HBO leads the nominations, though with a reduced tally from previous year.
