Top seed Thiem reaches Moselle Open final

The third-seeded Frenchman, who reached the quarter-finals of the US Open earlier this month, sealed a well-deserved victory with an ace down the middle.

An aggressive Thiem won 16 of 25 trips to net as he continues his quest for his first career title on indoor hard courts.

"I'm very happy about the match because the return is one of my biggest weaknesses and it's always tough against a good server like Gilles", said Thiem.

"Now I can rest and get ready for the China Open next week in Beijing".

"Thanks Manu, for everything", Pouille said.

"I think the first set was a pretty high level from both of us".

"Thiem's performances in Metz have boosted his chances of qualifying for the end of season Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, as the world number ten is now in seventh position in the standings, with the top eight players qualifying for the event".

It looked like Pouille would need three sets if he wanted to win after slipping 4-0 down in the first set tie-break, but a fine fightback saw him wrest the advantage.

Thiem sits in seventh position in the race for the ATP Finals, which will be in London in November, with five of the eight slots for the year-end tournament still up for grabs.

In the Metz title-decider, Pouille won 83% of points on first serve and saved the only break point he faced in game 11 of the first set.

"It's a long season, but I was feeling well (today)", he told French television.
