Uber Launches Autonomous Vehicle Pilot Program

Ford recently announced plans for a fully driverless auto for use in ride-hailing and car-sharing programmes by 2021. We saw the launch of self-driving cars in Pittsburgh earlier this week, and now, the ride-hailing company is set to map London with its own mapping cars that will look for the best pickup and drop-off points in the city. Now their hard work has paid off as the company officially announces that Self-Driving Uber cars are now available in Pittsburgh.

In the automobile industry, it is a breakthrough for a company to release autonomous vehicles, thus, potential investors are thinking that this move may be a step closer to Uber's long-awaited IPO (initial public offering).

It continued to say that current maps include information - such as ocean topography - that isn't relevant to Uber drivers and it needs to know more about areas.

What allowed Uber to get to the front of the pack was not auto engineering but rather its ability to accumulate and crunch massive amounts of data on road and driving conditions collected from the billions of miles driven by Uber drivers.

Taylor Pollier got an offer from Uber he couldn't refuse-to be part of an experiment with a auto of the future.

In a letter sent to drivers, Jennifer Krusius, general manager for Uber Pittsburgh, wrote that the San Francisco-based company is assembling a workforce to demonstrate driverless technology.

Uber is looking at two core metrics to evaluate its self-driving cars' performance: how long they can go before a human driver intervenes for any reason, and how long they can go without a "critical intervention" - basically, without having an accident.

Uber officials hope the initial trial will teach them how to ease public fears of adopting the bleeding-edge technology.
