Trump Wins Georgia, Other Early States Too Close to Call

CBS News is projecting that Donald Trump is the victor of the Republican primaries in Georgia and Virginia.

But opinion polls showed the former U.S. first lady with a big lead in six Southern states that have large blocs of black voters, who have been slow to warm to Mr Sanders.

Bernie Sanders won his home state of Vermont and also won Oklahoma, according to exit polls.

For Rubio, Super Tuesday turned into a bitter disappointment.

Meanwhile, the network projected Donald Trump as the victor in Georgia, and placed him several points ahead of his rivals in Virginia based on exit polls and the initial actual voting results.

Tuesday's vote was a test of whether amped up attacks from rivals Rubio and Ted Cruz had much of an impact on Trump's electoral performance.

"We have expanded the Republican Party", Trump said.

Even as Trump advances, many Republican Party leaders do not support him and worry he would be easily defeated in November if Clinton became the Democratic nominee.

ERIC MILLER/REUTERS Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) is hoping to win Minnesota, which would be his first win of the primary season. About half of independents went for Trump - though he won mainline Republicans as well.

Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee and Virginia were among the states both candidates won. Republicans were voting in 11 states, with 595 delegates at stake.

Overall, Trump leads with 257 delegates. Cruz collected at least 89 and Rubio picked up at least 51.

Sanders pledged to stay in the race.

She pushed a message of unity while portraying Republicans as divisive.

Clinton decried the GOP for "turning its back" on America's working and middle class citizens. She looked to win each state by wide margins.

"Tomorrow morning, we have a choice", Cruz told cheering supporters at the Redneck Country Club in Stafford, Texas. "If she hasn't straightened it out by now, she's not going to straighten it out in the next four years".

"Republicans, together we have a choice", Cruz said.

Clinton was looking for significant wins across the country that would make it much more hard for Sanders to be able to beat her in the race for the Democratic nomination.

The candidates are vying to win delegates who will vote for them at their parties' conventions in July. That's compared to Sanders, who has at least 145 delegates.

Including superdelegates, Clinton now has at least 882 delegates. Sanders has at least 319.

Clinton won women by more than 2:1 ratio.

If Democrat Clinton and Republican Trump - an outspoken billionaire political neophyte who has unexpectedly tapped into a reservoir of conservative rage at conventional politics - win big, it could spell doom for their challengers.

Sanders previously trounced Clinton in the New Hampshire primary, a victory that was widely attributed to his status as a senator from neighboring Vermont.
