The research is meant to help the USA space agency and its partners develop plans for eventual human missions to mars that will last at least two years.

Kelly and Russian cosmonaut Mikhail Kornienko hitched a ride back on Russia's Soyuz rocket.

Kelly and his Russian roommate for the past year, Mikhail Kornienko, landed in barren, frozen Kazakhstan on Wednesday. NASA and Roscosmos already are looking at continuing the Fluid Shifts investigation with future space station crews.

But why would the Democratic frontrunner be in Miami watching Super Tuesday from afar? Minnesota- Marco Rubio projected to win . Tyler Murphy, a 26-year-old Boston resident who works as a project manager for a construction company, said he voted for Trump.

The space veteran said he has witnessed some of the most incredible scenes of Earth during his mission, like spotting the northern lights, passing over the Bahamas and watching huge storms like Hurricane Patricia.

While Kelly says he could easily spend more time on the ISS, he is glad to be returning home, as there's definitely stuff he's missed. They worked with eight different crewmates during their 340-day mission, a record for a US spaceflight.

The Soyuz has undocked from the International Space Station and will begin the journey back to Earth.

Kelly has also delighted millions of us here on Earth with his awe-inspiring posts on social media that featured pictures and videos of Earth from his unique perspective almost 250 miles above. "Follow me as I rediscover # Earth!"

Homecoming for 2 spacemen after year aloft: 'We did it!'
He has admitted that if he wanted to, he might like to spend 100 more days, or even a year in space , according to USA Today. That world record of 437 days is still held by cosmonaut Valeri Vladimirovich Polyakov, who achieved it in the mid-90s.

Their flight sets a record for the space station and for the longest U.S. space mission.

The U.S. senator from New Jersey - who sits on Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee, which overseas NASA - introduced a resolution in the Senate to honor Kelly for his yearlong space expedition, which Booker described a "massive achievement for mankind". What, arguably, is more valuable though is that Kelly has an identical twin, his brother Mark - also an astronaut - is acting as a control.

The mission included genetic studies that gathered important data on the effects of very long durations in space on the crew. So, tracking how Kelly's body was affected will be the closest we've ever come to realizing how a human might handle a full-on Mars trip.
