Clinton, Trump claim first Super Tuesday victories

Democrats were voting in 11 states and American Samoa, with 865 delegates up for grabs.

Donald Trump won the Republican primary in Georgia, while other races were too close to call.

Mr Sanders led among voters aged under 30 and Mrs Clinton held a commanding lead among those aged 45 and over.

More than 90 percent of Clinton's voters wanted an insider, according to exit polls, and almost half said experience was the top quality they were looking for in a candidate.

Cruz was kept alive with projected victories in his adoptive home state of Texas, with a bumper haul of delegates, and neighboring Oklahoma.

The contests come at a turbulent moment for Republicans as they grapple with the prospect of Trump becoming the party's nominee.

In a fundraising email to supporters, Rubio's campaign said the senator "is not going to give up this fight - he'll do whatever it takes to stop Trump".

It has finally dawned on rival campaigns and alarmed party establishment figures that Trump -- after three thumping wins in New Hampshire, South Carolina and Nevada -- will win the nomination unless there is a dramatic reversal of fortunes.

According to a News 9/News on 6 poll released Monday, Trump is enjoying a double digit lead ahead of Rubio who took the second place spot from U.S. Sen. He's the only Republican to beat Trump this primary season, a fact he wielded as he called on Rubio and other candidates to step aside. "He hasn't won anything".

Republicans spent months largely letting Trump go unchallenged, wrongly assuming that his populist appeal with voters would fizzle. Instead, he's appeared to only grow stronger, winning states and drawing broad support for some of his most controversial proposals.

Clinton was supported by at least 80 percent of black voters in Alabama, Arkansas, Virginia, Georgia, Tennessee and Texas. Sanders' campaign announced that it raised $42.7 million in February, perhaps beating Clinton in the money race despite her recent victories in Nevada and SC.

"In just the last few days, Trump has refused to condemn white supremacism and the Ku Klux Klan, praised dictators Saddam Hussein and Moammar Qaddafi, and proposed infringing upon the First Amendment of our Constitution", he wrote.

In retaliation migrants were seen hurling rocks as the camp descended into a blazing inferno as gangs set a dozen shelters alight. Leggeri said: "The struggle against smugglers is necessary to ensure that the migrants are not victims of these traffickers".

House Speaker Paul Ryan said Tuesday that anyone who wants to be the Republican presidential nominee must reject any racist group or individual.

The disarray among Republicans comes as Clinton appears to be tightening her grip on the Democratic field.

"I will get in my pickup truck and drive around this country if I have to before I allow the party of Lincoln and Reagan to fall into the hands of a con man", Rubio said, referring to Trump.

"What we can't let happen is the scapegoating, the flaming, the finger pointing that is going on the Republican side", she told voters in Springfield, Massachusetts.

With Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Minnesota still voting but believed to be competitive states for the non-Trumps - not to mention Alaska, about which no one seems to know much in the way of expectations - there's a chance Trump wins six or fewer of the 12 states up for grabs today.

The scope and scale of the victories will sow terror among establishment Republicans, who fear the party of Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt and Ronald Reagan could face electoral annihilation against Democrats in November. Democrats also have a contest in American Samoa and for Democrats Abroad.
