Sanders and Cruz take Oklahoma primary

But her Democratic rival, Bernie Sanders, has won primaries in Oklahoma and his home state of Vermont, along with caucuses in Minnesota and Colorado, exit polls say.

Republicans will vote in 11 states, with 595 delegates at stake - almost half the 1,237 delegates needed to gain the nomination at the party's convention, also in July.

But Ted Cruz won his home state of Texas and Oklahoma, and called on other candidates to join him in fighting Trump's candidacy. Rubio has 28, Cruz has 22, John Kasich has six and Ben Carson has five.

Georgia was one of 12 states voting on Super Tuesday, and opinion polls showed Trump leading in almost all of them on the way to a possible big night that would intensify worries among Republican leaders who fear the billionaire could inflict long-term damage on the party. Another 865 delegates are up for grabs on Super Tuesday.

Oklahoma offers 43 delegates for Republicans and 38 delegates for Democrats.

Mrs Clinton, who seeks to become America's first female president, has been facing an unexpectedly strong challenge from Mr Sanders, a Vermont senator. Marco Rubio and the other candidates haven't won a state yet.

"The only campaign that is in a position to beat Donald Trump on Super Tuesday is our campaign", Cruz said while casting his own vote in Texas.

Cruz's twin Super Tuesday wins don't put him at the top of the delegate heap.

According to early results of the exit poll conducted by Edison Research for the Associated Press and Television Networks, Clinton led in both Virginia and Georgia among both men and women. About 55 percent of Ted Cruz's voters said sharing values was most important, as did 4 in 10 of Rubio's voters.

Addressing cheering supporters at his victory speech in Vermont on Tuesday, Mr Sanders aimed a jibe at the Republican front-runner saying: "We are not going to let the Donald Trumps of the world divide us".
