Super Tuesday: Clinton, Sanders, Trump & Cruz Win States

Cruz's projected Texas and Oklahoma victories, meanwhile, are crucial wins that gives him a rationale to carry on in the race.

Clinton's wins across the South appear to confirm her strong advantage over Sanders among African-American voters who bankrolled her huge win in the SC primary on Saturday. Trump said of a Clinton comment in her victory speech.

"She's been there for so long", Trump said at the Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida.

"We are going to invest for our young people in education and jobs, not jail or incarceration", Sanders told his supporters in Essex Junction, VT.

"Now the campaign moves forward to the Crescent City the Motor City and beyond", Clinton said.

For Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, the night was turning into a disappointment.

For Rubio, Super Tuesday turned into a bitter disappointment. Trump said he had not understood the interviewer who first raised the question about Duke, and he did later repudiate him.

Trump, 69, anxious many Republicans with his proposals, such as building a wall along the USA southern border with Mexico, deporting 11 million illegal immigrants and slapping a temporary ban on Muslims entering the country.

I was really scared that if these people found out, they will cause harm to me and my family, so I didn't want anyone to know, and I didn't want to leave any immigration records.

Overall, Trump leads the Republican field with 221 delegates.

But she also won MA, picking up her first victory in Mr Sanders' native New England.

Clinton is now assured of winning at least 175 delegates on Tuesday. That's compared to Sanders, who has at least 145 delegates.

Democrats voted in 11 states and American Samoa, with 865 delegates up for grabs.

Texas has 155 delegates, who are divided proportionately unless a candidate gets more than 50 percent of the vote.

Cruz has also criticized Trump on the matter. Marco Rubio had been close on Trump's heels in Virginia, but the current front-runner cinched the lead.

Republicans will allocate 595 delegates from the results of Super Tuesday, almost half of the 1,237 needed for the nomination. Instead, he's watched Trump, a brash NY real estate mogul, display surprising strength with evangelical Christians and social conservatives.

Even as Trump advances, many Republican Party leaders do not support him and worry he would be easily defeated in November if Clinton became the Democratic nominee.

Bill Ballenger, former longtime editor of Inside Michigan Politics, whose state will vote next week, said Sanders wasn't necessarily staying in the race to hurt Clinton.

Sanders won his home state of Vermont and Oklahoma, two of five states he was targeting for victory on Tuesday.

Early exit polls underscored Sanders' continued weaknesses with black voters, a core part of the Democratic constituency.

Both are seeking to break out as Mr Trump's main rival, after the billionaire won in Virginia, Arkansas, Alabama, Massachusetts, Tennessee and Georgia. She was also bolstered by women and older voters.

In Alabama, for example, where 65 percent of Democratic voters wanted to continue Obama's policies, she won them by 83-16 percent.

"I am a unifier", Trump told reporters in Palm Beach, Florida, dismissing concerns about his rhetoric.
