Rosberg fastest but says Mercedes have more to do

Bottas's flying laps on Tuesday suggested that Williams are there or thereabouts at the head of the mix behind Mercedes, as they have been since they switched to the German engines in 2014.

As their competitors chased table-topping times in the opening test, Mercedes were content to simply cover as many miles as possible, ending last week with 675 laps-228 more than their closest rivals-to their name.

But the Sky F1 pundit is expecting the W07 to be given some stiff opposition when the new season starts on 20 March in Melbourne.

Ferrari had dominated the first four days of testing but that was before Mercedes show his true colors. It's been a monumental effort from this team to get the vehicle to where it is today. The team managed to lap within 3.5 seconds of the fastest time, as well as lapping 31 times, on their test debut, whilst a soft-tyre stint on day three put Romain Grosjean in P2.

That was still around two tenths of a second slower than the best time from last week set by Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel on the ultra-soft tyres.

Despite his telemetry glitch, it wasn't a bad day for Fernando Alonso, the Spaniard finishing third on the timesheets and completing a respectable 93 laps.

"Obviously it's a great feeling to know that our level is so high right now and the team is working as well, commented Rosberg before displaying some caution".

Rosberg was quickest on the medium tyres before swapping to the softs in the hour before lunch.

It was a disappointing morning for Manor as Rio Haryanto managed just one lap before an oil leak kept him in the garage.

It was also a frustrating day for newcomers Haas, who were forced to abandon their programme early thanks to a fuel system problem which left Esteban Gutierrez 11th in the times on just 23 laps.

Pulis's side have seven points from their last three Premier League games. We've got plenty of teams in and around us in the next few weeks.

But what we saw over the four days at the Circuit de Catalunya was quite a surprise.

The vehicle is based around an evolution of last year's chassis, which was one of the best and most competitive on the grid, despite being held back by the Honda power unit, and the lack of power and performance that it brought.

With each day, the Toro Rosso, now sporting its new (?!?) livery, looks better and better, and as Max Verstappen reeled off the laps - 144 in total - one wondered if the Faenza team might beat its sister outfit this season, and should that be the case how it will go down with Mr Mateschitz and pals.

The new Renault factory team had warned not to expect much from them in 2016.
