In a moving video on her YouTube channel that has been viewed over 150,000 times, Nchom demonstrated the power of makeup.

Fast forward seven years and now Shalom shares her incredible makeup tutorials on YouTube, including the empowering video where she made up half her face to show the power of makeup.

In an interview with BuzzFeed Nchom admits that for a long time the stares she received from both children and adults gave her a hardened shell, and she was often bullied.

At the age of 9, Nchom, who goes by Shalom Blac on social media, was left with severe burns on her face, head, and chest after an accident with frying oil at her family's store.

"Makeup shouldn't make you happy", she says.

Incredibly, the freelance makeup artist is entirely self-taught. "I felt like a living statue that people came to see".

After the fire the beauty blogger found it hard to stay confident and deal with the rude comments and stares from strangers.

But now she uses makeup as a form of artistic expression, and loves herself just as she is. "I cursed people out and cried on many occasions".

Nchom hopes that her Instagram photos will help other burn survivors understand that it doesn't matter what they look like, but loving themselves is important.

"I'm accepting of what happened and I'm just going to live with that", she says in the video, "so I don't really carry if anyone has anything negative to say about that". But, although Nchom may be in the business of showing people how to flawlessly doll up their visages, she also emphasizes the importance of valuing yourself - makeup or no makeup.
