Arizona Republic endorses Democrat for 1st time ever

Trump "responds to criticism with the petulance of verbal spit wads".

"Well, it's been insane around here", said Phil Boas, director of the editorial page. "Hillary Clinton understands this. I don't believe true readers of the editorial page are surprised by this at all, because over the past year we have been writing scathing, scalding articles about Donald Trump", Boas said.

We started raising the alarm about him... cautioning that what this man is saying is risky.

The Arizona Republic endorsement said that Clinton, unlike Trump, for all of her mistakes and flaws, and has more experience with foreign policy than Trump does.

John Weaver, a top Kasich strategist, told HuffPost that winning all the important New Hampshire endorsements ― except the Union Leader ― and the nearby Boston Globe helped boost his candidate's name recognition and visibility.

Contrast Clinton's tenacity and professionalism with Trump, who began his campaign with gross generalities about Mexico and Mexicans as criminals and rapists.

The rest of the op-ed is a lengthy, point-by-point comparison of the two candidates, which concludes in each instance that Donald Trump is utterly unqualified to be president.

"Resume vs. resume, judgment vs. judgment, this election is no contest", the paper wrote in its September 7 editorial, a day after publishing a scathing anti-Trump opinion piece.

"The only thing I don't particularly care for is some of the language people have used", he said.

"Where I think newspaper editorials might also have an impact is on those thinking of voting Libertarian or Green", Mr. Yepsen said.

The state's largest newspaper got plenty of attention with its endorsement, including the Democratic presidential nominee herself. According to the Washington Post's tally, the Republican nominee "is still without a daily newspaper endorsement in the general election". But this is not a normal election year. It urged readers to vote, whether for Mrs. Clinton or a third party, or in down-ballot races - "just not for Donald Trump". She's tough. She doesn't back down.

Meanwhile, Trump has accused Hillary Clinton is making "nasty" ads about him.

The Republic also took aim at Trump's hard-line stance against illegal immigration, which has been a contentious issue in Arizona. This newspaper has not recommended a Democrat for the nation's highest office since before World War II - if you're counting, that's more than 75 years and almost 20 elections.
