A glance at Friday play in the Ryder Cup

Oct 02, 2016, 01:52

Rory McIlroy and Thomas Pieters are trying to ride their Ryder Cup momentum. Spieth and Reed were unbeaten in three matches at Gleneagles, while Rose and Stenson were undefeated in three matches at the last Ryder Cup.

"It's better to have a small deficit with momentum", Europe captain Darren Clarke said. The afternoon featured a noticeable decline in crowd outbursts, which was a direct effect of the opening pairing struggling to hold off Stenson and Rose.

"It was a lot of heart, a heart that went out with two-down and four to go", said Mickelson, competing this week in his 11th Ryder Cup."It was a match where I didn't drive the ball well".

"I am a big fan of golf and a big fan of the Ryder Cup and hopefully we can enjoy these awesome players, because all of them are outstanding".

The Americans fell 2 down when Mickelson hit out-of-bounds on par-5 fifth and then had to play a right-handed shot next to a fence.

They still had the lead. Rose and Stenson led 4-up going into 14 and brought the hammer down when Justin Rose birdied the 14th giving the Europeans a 5 & 4 victory, their first win of the day. Sullivan chipped too strongly on the 15th leading to bogey.

Shot of the Day: Rory McIlroy's 4-iron to 20 feet on No. 16 for an eagle that clinched the final point for the European team.

The third match of the morning saw Jimmy Walker and Zach Johnson defeat Sergio Garcia and Martin Kaymer 4&2.

The Reed-Spieth tandem took a four-hole lead to the 13th tee box, before posting three straight bogeys. USA captain Davis Love III was surprisingly bold last week when he said the message to his players would be that they comprised "the best golf team maybe ever assembled".

That's the way it has gone for the Americans ever since they began the Ryder Cup with a sweep of the opening session. Even so, it was a matter of Europe running out of holes in the shortest match of the morning. Spieth and Reed then set the tone with a 3-and-2 foursomes victory over Stenson and Rose, and the Americans delivered the first sweep of the opening session since that 1975 team at Laurel Valley. The rest of the match was all redemption for Stenson and Rose.

Between them the pair notched nine birdies to crush their American opponents, who appeared to run out of steam towards the end.

Love also broke up the Brandt Snedeker-Brooks Koepka tandem after they were undefeated in two matches. The two-time major champion sank to his knees and Cabrera Bello duly holed out to drag Europe level with a fourth win in five holes. It was the first loss for Spieth and Reed in five matches together. Surprisingly after the morning mauling Clarke partnered Pieters with McIlroy against Johnson and Kuchar, leaving both Matt Fitzpatrick and Chris Wood to play no part in the day. They raced out to a 4-up lead at the turn without much resistance from Holmes and Moore, who didn't make a single birdie on the front nine. Historically, Europe is stronger in the foursomes and America is stronger in the four-ball.

"I like being ahead, there's no two ways about it". That was a rare highlight for Europe.

The European duo took an early lead and McIlroy explained afterwards that they were intent on keeping the pressure on the American pair.

The Spaniards played the last four holes in 2 under. Sullivan found water off the par-3 17th tee while the U.S. duo birdied to retake the lead for good.
