I planned animated celebration before Ryder Cup victory, says McIlroy

Oct 02, 2016, 01:53

The next act of that show begins at 0735 in the morning when McIlroy and Pieters go out again to face Rickie Fowler and Phil Mickelson in the foursomes.

Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed improved to 3-0 as a team in the Ryder Cup Friday morning, and they will anchor the United State's lineup on Saturday.

To little surprise, the United States will turn back to numerous pairings that found success on Friday.

The United States have similar shoe-ins.

Rory McIlroy finally got a victory over Phil Mickelson.

"Given the buildup over the last couple years, the criticism, the comments, what have you, the pressure was greater than I've ever felt", Mickelson said.

"We're obviously not fazed by anything that is said by the crowd and not fazed by anything that the USA team throws at us".

Willett sat out the morning session, but was jeered on the first tee in the afternoon. McIlroy buried the eagle putt, calmly bowed twice to the crowd and then punched the chilly Minnesota air with his fist.

Rory McIlroy was so excited to win his afternoon fourballs match at the Ryder Cup on Friday that he planned his animated celebration before the point was won and also had to apologise to a member of the opposition.

"This is definitely a little more hostile", McIlroy said.

It was even more emphatic in the final match with Dustin Johnson and Matt Kuchar pasting Lee Westwood and rookie Thomas Pieters 5&4. McIlroy finished it with his eagle putt, and he a chance to give something back to the fans.

"I'll send him a text or go find him in the hotel tonight and apologise to him". You know the drill: No one believes in the USA team, the task force, the reinvented process, it's us against everyone. "And we were lucky enough to be able to hit a lot of greens and have good looks". "We didn't know it would THAT well, but we knew were going to have a good morning".

"Our goal is to win every session", said Tom Lehman, one of Love's army of vice captains.

Palmer's golf bag from that contest had been displayed on the first tee in tribute after his death on Sunday. Spieth and Reed then set the tone with a 3-and-2 foursomes victory over Stenson and Rose, and the Americans delivered the first sweep of the opening session since that 1975 team at Laurel Valley.

Watched by massive and largely partisan galleries at ultra-long Hazeltine, Rose and Stenson came from one down after three holes to take control against Reed and Spieth in a match of high quality to help turn the tide for Europe in the afternoon. Nine holes of halves, led the Americans to a 1-down defict going into number twelve.

"It's better to have a small deficit with momentum", Europe captain Darren Clarke said.

"I'm really happy with the way everybody just hung in there till the end", spun Love, finding even more room for further optimism heading into Saturday. "Because we didn't have much at lunchtime".

Beaten for the first time, Rose and Stenson went right back out against Spieth and Reed and handed the American duo its first Ryder Cup loss.

"Then seeing the crowd in the U.S. how step by step - nine, eight, seven, six, five, four - in the last holes, it was really awesome".

The veteran Garcia - this time teamed with fellow Spaniard Rafael Cabrera-Bello, making his debut - won 3 & 2 against the new U.S. pairing of Ryan Moore and JB Holmes to close the gap once again.

Snedeker did, combining with Brooks Koepka for the Amerricans' only point in the afternoon session, a 5 and 4 victory over Willett and Martin Kaymer.
