Pipe bomb explodes before Marines charity run; no injuries

He said the site of the explosion, outside on a major thoroughfare of a fashionable enclave in one of the most bustling areas of New York City, was being treated as a crime scene. He did say there are no known threats to public safety at this time. We believe it was intentional. Local authorities are now investigating the incident to see if it was a terrorist act.

After a pipe bomb cancelled a 5-kilometer fundraising race on September 17, runners may take part in a different race in NY for no fee.

All beaches have reopened in the Jersey Shore town where a pipe bomb exploded shortly before thousands of runners were to participate in a charity 5K race to benefit Marines and sailors. No injuries were reported, and a four-block area was evacuated, authorities said.

He said the agency is working with the Joint Terrorism Task Force.

Semper Five race director Frank Costello said he never considered rescheduling the 5K, following last Saturday's garbage can explosion during the event's one-mile fun run. Bomb squad officers removed the second device and transferred it to a safe location to conduct a controlled explosion.

Brad Cohen, special agent in charge of the FBI's Newark field office, said at an early evening news conference that investigators had determined there was no longer any threat to the community.

Mayor Bill DeBlasio said to expect an even more expanded police presence with the U.N. General Assembly convening in the coming week.

There were no reported injuries or damage to surrounding buildings, and the area was immediately placed on a lockdown while bomb-sniffing dogs searched for other explosive devices, the prosecutor's office said.

Costello announced that some 3,000 Semper Five registrants will have an opportunity to run this Sunday in New York City instead.

"The fortunate thing here in New Jersey is that no one was injured", Christie said.

Ruedin said he soon saw smoke coming from the garbage can and saw other debris in the area, though he didn't know if those items were parts of the can and/or trash that had been in the receptacle.

Investigators discovered three similar devices wired together near the boardwalk, authorities said. Witnesses described the blast as "like a volcano" and stated that the explosion produced a wall of flame that sent people "running for their lives".

The bomb along the race course conjured memories of the Boston Marathon bombing.
