Just 25 percent of Note 7s in U.S. have been exchanged — Samsung

Samsung on Tuesday sent out an update to let customers know over half a million replacement Note 7 units have been shipped to USA carrier and retail locations. About 1 million Note 7 units had been recalled in the country. More than 500,000 of the handsets will be disseminated throughout carrier and retail stores, where impacted customers will be able to exchange their phones for the less volatile variety.

"New devices will be in stores no later than tomorrow and we will continue to take the necessary actions to ensure users are powering down and immediately exchanging recalled devices", said Samsung Electronics America President Tim Baxter in a statement.

In another update, Samsung now says 25 percent of Note 7 devices have so far been exchanged in the United States.

In other words, Samsung will nag you incessantly until you go exchange your phone.

Some of our readers were pinged by Best Buy over the weekend with a note about picking up their replacement phone, so we know that some exchange devices are and have been available. Samsung attributed the problem to a "battery cell issue" and stopped selling the device September 2. After a software update coming imminently, users will see a message about the recall every time they power the device on. With the new software update, a green battery icon will appear on the status bar to prove a Note 7 has a safe battery.

The SAFO notes that the hazardous material regulations do not preclude an airline from proactively placing its own restrictions on carrying or using specific lithium battery products on board aircraft, prior to an official government recall or advisory.

The following contact points can be used to find exchange points for the Galaxy Note 7.
