Syrian military declares end to seven-day ceasefire

A United Nations spokesman said at least 18 of 31 trucks had been hit but could not confirm it was by an air strike.

The Observatory was unable to confirm if the planes responsible were Syrian or Russian.

Jan Egeland, head of the United Nations humanitarian task force for Syria, tweeted that there were "many killed and injured" in the strike.

Mr de Mistura's humanitarian adviser, Jan Egeland, said the convoy had been "bombarded" while offloading at warehouses.

The convoy, part of a routine interagency dispatch operated by the Syrian Red Crescent, was hit in rural western Aleppo province.

Asked whether the ceasefire was dead, Churkin said "This is a very big question mark".

It was unclear Monday evening whether the agreement - which has brought a brief respite to the war-torn country - would truly collapse on the ground.

Rudskoi said that it has become "meaningless" for the Syrian government forces to observe the U.S. -Russia-brokered truce in view of continuous rebel violations.

For the agreement to enter the next phase, which includes military coordination between the USA and Russia, State Department spokesman John Kirby said that humanitarian aid flows must increase and that the cease-fire must hold for seven days.

Yet although the strike was by far the biggest impediment to emerge since the shaky cease-fire went into effect a week ago, the truce was already not going well.

Humanitarian aid was supposed to flow to Aleppo and five other areas in Syria during that time.

"We will be consulting with our Russian counterparts to continue to urge them to use their influence on Assad to these ends", spokesman John Kirby said in a statement.

There was more than a note of exasperation in US Secretary of State John Kerry's remarks Sunday when he demanded the global community show it "can end this seemingly endless sense of deterioration and chaos" in Syria.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights did not immediately report any casualties in the raids on the Orum al-Kubra area west of Aleppo city.

Which countries were involved in the attack, which Russian Federation said killed 62 Syrian soldiers, is unclear.

Russian Federation has demanded an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council on the issue while the United States has criticised Russia's positioning.

The International Committee of the Red Cross says a convoy of its trucks carrying food for 84,000 people did make it to Talbiseh, near the city of Homs, today, even as fighting near the city resumed.

The Syrian military statement placed the blame on the rebel groups.

Speaking to Iran's deputy foreign minister Hossein Jaberi Ansari, Assad accused world powers of supporting "terrorist organisations" in Syria like the Islamic State group.

"This step (cease-fire) was to constitute a real chance to stop the bloodshed".

The agreement, brokered by a temporary partnership between the White House and the Kremlin, had been on the rocks virtually since it began, with both the Syrian military and militants looking to oust President Bashar al-Assad continuing hostilities. "Instead it worked to undermine it with organized violations during the week as well as preventing aid from reaching Aleppo", the group said in a statement sent to reporters.

The opposition reported 254 violations by government forces and their allies since the truce started on September 12 and a senior Syrian opposition official declared the cease-fire "clinically dead".

The opposition blamed government warplanes.

The U.S. says Russian Federation, by carrying out air strikes for Assad's government, is deliberately targeting moderate opposition groups. After that, their goal was for Moscow and Washington to begin an unprecedented joint effort to coordinate air strikes on Islamic extremist groups in Syria while grounding Assad's air force in those areas.

On Monday, the United Kingdom confirmed that British aircraft - believed to be unmanned, remotely-piloted Reaper drones - had been involved in the strike, along with jets from Australia and Denmark.
