Edmund takes positives from US Open run after Djokovic defeat

Meanwhile, fourth-seed Rafael Nadal suffered a huge blow as he crashed out of the fourth major of the season after going down against France's Lucas Pouille. The other two are Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Gael Monfils.

The Serbian ace was in great form on Sunday and showed no signs of being rusty despite only playing 6 games in the past 2 rounds because of injuries to Jiri Vesely and Mikhail Youzhny.

"It feels great to play a match", Djokovic said in an on-court interview.

But while Djokovic looked good for the first two sets against the 84th-ranked Edmund, and again at the very end, there was that interlude that included the medical visit.

Djokovic's victory put him into the last eight against ninth-seeded Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, a 6-3 6-3 6-7 6-2 victor against American 26th seed Jack Sock.

He beat Kyle Edmund of Great Britain 6-2, 6-1, 6-4 early on Monday.

But Edmund went on to save all three and then break twice himself - and Isner's fate for the set was sealed when he failed to make a simple forehand volley.

"I just enjoyed the experience", he said.

"It's going to be a tough match".

"It's given me a lot more belief in my game", Edmund said. Sure, as you are approaching the second week of a Grand Slam you want to have match-play and you want to have time on the centre court before you face one of the top players.

If Kerber reaches the final, Williams must win the title to top stay on top of the pile. "I think I can do big things in tennis", she told reporters at one point.

Isner held for 5-all, but Edmund, the most relaxed of characters, was not altogether pleased that he had to successfully challenge two poor calls on the American's serve.

"When it happens it will be an awesome feeling, because that was also one of my dreams when I was a kid".

"What my game is is trying to be aggressive".

Edmund had never made it past the first round in NY prior to the 2016 tournament.

Edmund was playing in the fourth round of a grand slam for the first time and making his debut in Arthur Ashe Stadium but Djokovic taught the youngster a lesson with a 6-2 6-1 6-4 victory.

Edmund dealt with some more big serves and he held his nerve whilst Isner seemingly lost his, as the Brit secured victory 7-5 in the tie break to complete a 4-6, 6-3, 2-6, 6-7 victory.

Fourth-round first-timer Anastasija Sevastova, who put out French Open champion Garbine Muguruza in the second round, meets British 13th seed Johanna Konta.

The taut battle came down to the fifth-set tiebreaker.

The 26th-seeded Sock upset 2014 U.S. Open champ Marin Cilic in the third round, never facing a break point.

The 29-year-old notched two aces in the opening set and won 14 of 16 points on his first serve. Tsonga hopes to make his seventh career grand slam semifinal.

Dimitrov actually started the match well, but once he'd thrown everything at Murray and come up against a brick wall his belief disappeared all too quickly and it was one-way traffic in a fine performance from Murray.
