'Borrowed Time': the animated Western short by Pixar animators

Borrowed Time is a short film from co-directors Andrew Coats and Lou Hamou-Lhadj, who've been chipping away at this project on the side while spending their days on movies like Inside Out and courageous.

While speaking about the movie in a video that was uploaded on YouTube, Hamou-Lhadj said, "In America, animation has largely become synonymous with kids' films, whereas elsewhere around the world, it's celebrated as a medium that can be used to tell any story". Even after so many years, the Sheriff could not forget the accident that killed his father and how instead of saving him, he shot him. Rather than spoil the rest of the plot, you should really just watch it.

Bradford Hornsby is an editor, music writer, web producer, and pop culture blogger for CBS stations in the San Francisco Bay Area.

While only available on streaming site Vimeo for a very short time, Borrowed Time has all the components that we hope to see play out in a larger motion picture. They have left you teary eyed like the five-minute love story in Up, had you laughing in the Toy Story trilogy, made you think about how you feel in Inside Out.

Check out why and how Andrew Coats and Lou Hamou-Lhadj made Borrowed Time in this exclusive featurette.

The short film uses the iconography and landscape of the American West to tell the story of an aging sheriff returning to the scene of a violent and tragic moment in his childhood. The first close-up on the central character is so detailed, you can see the fraying, stains, and stitching on his old shirt, and the rough nap of his corduroy vest.

The Argentine composer Gustavo Santaolalla, now known for his work in the The Last of Us videogame score, is responsible for the musicalization of the short.

But, with their most recent piece of art, Borrowed Time, there's no doubt that this will trigger all kinds of emotions. But what do these highly-skilled animators do in their free time when they are not working on a Pixar feature?
