In March of previous year, Saudi Arabia and its Arab allies launched a massive military campaign aimed at reversing Houthi gains in Yemen and restoring the country's embattled government.

Notably, the Reuters report reveals that "State Department officials also were privately skeptical of the Saudi military's ability to target Houthi militants without killing civilians and destroying "critical infrastructure" needed for Yemen to recover".

Since March 2015, Washington approved more than $22.2 billion in arms sales to Saudi Arabia, not all of which has arrived.

Human rights rights organizations say there is a compelling case for war crimes charges to be filed against the United States, which is one of at least a dozen countries participating in or backing the coalition, including Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Morocco, Jordan, Pakistan, Sudan, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain and Britain.

Meanwhile, American support for the Saudi-led coalition's military intervention against theHouthis is fraying following an airstrike Saturday on a funeral hall that may have killed more than 100 civilians.

The conflict has killed more than 6,800 people - nearly two thirds of them civilians - and displaced at least three million since the coalition launched it campaign in support of President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi.

The Houthis rebel are Shia and Hadi are from Muslim Sunni sect which is the reason Houthis are backed by Iran and Sunnis by Saudi Arabia.

"Anybody who takes action, fires against U.S. Navy ships operating in worldwide waters, does so at their own peril", Navy Capt. Jeff Davis said.

The Saudi-led coalition is responsible for the majority of the thousands of civilians killed and wounded. Though U.S. military advisers were pulled from Yemen, the U.S. military continues launching drone attacks against AQAP from a base in nearby Djibouti.

A missile was also fired at Marib in central Yemen, a base for pro-government militiamen and troops who have struggled to advance on the Houthi-controlled capital Sanaa.

Yemen is an impoverished country on the southwestern tip of the Arabian Peninsula next to Bab-el-Mandeb, a narrow strait separating Yemen and the Horn of Africa that joins the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean.

U.S. Navy ships have often been deployed to the waters off Yemen to prevent a military orterrorist threat to the key shipping lane.

The Houthis denied firing at the USA ship.

Shiite power Iran supports the Houthis, but denies arming them.

The Pentagon did not specify how close the missiles came to the USS Mason.

Yemen's Houthi movement launched a ballistic missile deep into Saudi Arabia and may have also fired on a US warship, two days after an apparent Saudi-led air strike killed 140 mourners at a funeral attended by powerful tribal leaders.
