Labour scores victory after May allows parliament a say in Brexit talks

Britain's government faces a court challenge tomorrow (13 October) that could delay Brexit as lawyers argue Prime Minister Theresa May cannot take the country out of the European Union without a parliamentary vote.

But Ms. May, under pressure from Labour, other lawmakers and global financial markets to offer them more than her catch phrase of "Brexit means Brexit", stopped short of promising a formal vote on her strategy before triggering Article 50 of the E.U.'s Lisbon Treaty.

In a last-minute concession, the government accepted a Labour motion calling for MPs to have more say over the strategy for leaving the European Union before article 50 is triggered by the end of March.

Victory for the claimants would mean parliament would have to debate triggering Brexit, vote on Article 50 and then pass legislation, a process which could delay an European Union exit.

The government says it has "royal prerogative" - a type of executive privilege - to negotiate Brexit without needing a legally-binding parliamentary vote.

Labour Brexit spokesman Keir Starmer said that Britons had voted to quit the bloc but there was no consensus on the terms.

It will stage a Commons vote on Wednesday on a motion calling for MPs to be able to "properly scrutinise" the government's plan.

"Someone once said that leaving the Single Market would risk a loss of investors and business and we risk going backwards when it comes to global trade".

"We hope you will. stay true to your principles, rather than following the edicts of an increasingly authoritarian Prime Minister, who seems intent on repeating her predecessor's mistakes, whatever the calamitous results".

British Prime Minister Theresa May stands with her husband, as they wave to delegates following her keynote address on the final day of the annual Conservative Party conference in Birmingham, central England, on October 5.

May and her ministers have been refusing to disclose details on the ground that they will not provide a running commentary on their negotiating plans.

The Labour MP said: "It is welcome that the Government has conceded that there should be proper parliamentary scrutiny of their negotiating position before they trigger Article 50".

May faced a rebellion from members of her own party and was forced to concede that Conservative lawmakers could support the opposition Labour Party's motion on Wednesday.

Any scrutiny must "not undermine the negotiating position of the Government as negotiations are entered into which will take place after Article 50 has been triggered".

He stressed that as at now it has offered no clarity, transparency, and no chance of scrutiny of the process for developing a strategy.

She also told the Labour leader: " We will be leaving the European Union and in doing that we will negotiate the right deal for the United Kingdom, which means the right deal in terms of operating within and trading with the European market.

Debates in both the Commons and the House of Lords saw politicians fiercely attack the government's "go it alone" plan to invoke the exit process from Europe.

But the pound gave up some of its gains later on Wednesday after May and her Brexit minister, David Davis, appeared less concessionary in parliament.
