Brother: Syrian suspected in bomb plot 'excited about life'

Authorities said he had killed himself.

Rolf Jacob, director of the prison in Leipzig, left, and Saxony's state justice minister Sebastian Gemkow srrive for a press conference in Dresden, eastern Germany, Thursday, Oct. 13, 2016 after the death of 22-year-old Syrian man Jaber Albakr suspected of planning an Islamic extremist bombing attack strangled himself by tying his shirt to the bars of his jail cell.

A Syrian refugee arrested on suspicion of planning a major terror attack in Berlin reportedly spoke to a member of Isis in Syria about a possible target a day before police discovered explosives in his apartment. During the calls, 22-year-old Albakr spoke about his attack plans, the newspaper said.

"What happened last night demands swift and comprehensive investigation by the justice authorities", Germany's top security official, Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere, said Thursday.

The suicide put a glaring spotlight on law enforcement failures in the eastern state, where Albakr had evaded arrest for two days until a trio of fellow Syrians tied him up and turned him in early Monday.

Federal prosecutors said Albakr, who was granted asylum in Germany previous year, was planning to carry out an "Islamist-motivated attack". "The death of the suspect makes the work of the investigators more hard as what would have been possible to find out from him is no longer possible".

When asked whether his brother favored any particular group, Alaa Albakr said: "My brother only supported peace and stability".

The brother claimed an unnamed Islamic preacher in Berlin had urged Albakr to return to Syria and join IS, which he did in September 2015, Der Spiegel reported.

During that time, he visited one of the city's two airports, they added, without saying which one. "He had asked me and my family to accompany him there".

German security sources told Reuters that Albakr had traveled to Turkey after receiving asylum in Germany and spent several months there this summer.
