"Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children" tops box office in North America
Although it opened to some mediocre reviews, "Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children" managed to take over the top slot as the fantasy adventure took in an estimated $28.0 million on its opening weekend.
Real-life oil rig thriller Deepwater Horizon, starring Wahlberg and Kate Hudson, lands in second place in North America with $20.6 million (GBP15.9 million), while director Antoine Fuqua's Magnificent Seven remake, starring Denzel Washington, Ethan Hawke and Chris Pratt, slips to three in its second week on release.
Burton's latest movie, from 20th Century Fox and Chernin Entertainment, adapted from Ransom Riggs's best-selling novel, tells the story of a young boy (Asa Butterfield) who meets Miss Peregrine (Eva Green) and children with magical powers at her orphanage on an island in Wales. The film was well-made and costs about $110 million to make.
Deepwater Horizon, starring Mark Wahlberg, cost even more to produce and featured a almost life-size replica of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig.
Taking a fairly average $65 million over the week from a wide 60 country release it is still good enough to double the takings of the number 2 film of the week.
"The Magnificent Seven" was above $61.6 million in domestic sales after two weeks, with a $15.7 million projected for this weekend.
Final figures are expected Monday. Among the major territories, it picked up $5.2 million in South Korea, $4.6 million from the United Kingdom, $3.8 million in Mexico, and $3.1 million in Australia. "Masterminds", $6.6 million 7. "Don't Breathe", $2.4 million ($3.8 million international). 9.
Chinese romantic-comedy "I Belonged to You" was nipping at "Miss Peregrine's" heels. "Finding Dory", $13.6 million. 10.
