American finish Ryder Cup victory

President Barack Obama congratulated the winning USA golf team on winning the Ryder Cup at Hazeltine golf course in Chaska, Minn.in a tweet, referencing late golf great Arnold Palmer, who died a week ago. Probably not much need to change the captain, either, after Davis Love III came up a victor in his second time at the helm.

United States captain Phil Mickelson sprays the crowd with champagne after the Ryder Cup golf victory.

Ryder Cup players for both teams wore pins paying tribute to the "King", the nickname Palmer earned for his popularity on and off the course.

It will be hard to mention Reed and not think of this weekend at Hazeltine National Golf Club where he went from a golfer with major championship potential to a Ryder Cup legend.

The final score was 17-11, the biggest rout for the United States since 1981. An hour before play ended on Saturday, Europe may have harboured hopes of pulling level, but this win helped decisively tip momentum in the Americans' favour.

And that has Lefty thinking a bit.

"We need to build on this", he said. Otherwise, it's all for naught.

NEXT U.S. STAR?: When the task force does get back to work, its No. 1 priority should be to find more guys like Patrick Reed.

In more ways than one, the U.S. proved up to the task as their meticulous preparations and renewed team spirit helped them beat Europe to clinch the Ryder Cup on Sunday for the first time since 2008.

Reed's gutsy showing in all five matches was exceeded only by his bravado.

"I'm just proud of these guys", Love said.

"It was a new chapter over the last two years and the biggest thing is not really the win, but that we are all pulling in the same direction together". It's great for him to get fired up on occasion, but not to lose control of it.

World number three Rory McIlroy and playing partner Thomas Pieters were two of the best performers for the European squad which featured six rookies.

"This is something I want to be a part of every single year", said Moore. "I'm not letting anyone else have him".

But picking a double major victor apparently in form and the most experienced player available who was the glue in the team room at Medinah and Gleneagles - as well as a specialist in nurturing rookies into the event - was logical and reasonable. One was removed from the course after an exchange with McIlroy.

"We've been kicked around for so long, if you keep on losing you feel you've got to do something different", he said about changes the USA team made to increase continuity in the team hierarchy and allow more input from the players.

Team Europe fell short of retaining the Ryder Cup on Sunday, losing 17-11 to a veteran American squad who captured the biennial golfing showdown for the first time since 2008.

"It is disappointing", McIlroy said. "That's just not who we are, that's not what we do". That's not what we do.

"There won't be [any] - and we will be making that clear".

"We did this for our captain".

"He's the reason why I got my point today".

It was wonderful to watch for the fans, jammed fairways and crowded around greens to cheer on the home team. "Hopefully I stay the same size so it's easy for them".

The featured match was McIlroy and Reed.

Reed came to Hazeltine after posting a 3-0-1 mark in his only previous appearance, at Gleneagles in 2014, and forged a partnership with Jordan Spieth that was something to see.

Watson remained emotional talking about the experience. "This is unbelievable right now, to actually get the point that clinches it", Moore said. "He was in my ear all day".
