Canada, China aim to strike free-trade deal

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang waves as he and his wife Cheng Hong arrive at the Ottawa Macdonald-Cartier International Airport in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada September 21, 2016.

During Chinese Premier Li Keqiang's visit to Canada this week, both countries inked a deal that allows for the recovery as well as the sharing of these ill-gotten gains. On Sunday the two sides signed agreements for China to further finance research, manufacturing and marketing of Cuban products. The contracts also cover industrial capacity cooperation, new energy and inspection and quarantine.

Speaking with academics and business leaders on Tuesday at the Waldorf Astoria in New York, Li said China would continue to push for reforms such as streamlining administration, delegating more power and strengthening protection of intellectual property rights to create a better environment for foreign investors.

Both nations are talking about an extradition treaty, which China has long wanted so it can press for the return of what it says are corrupt officials who fled to Canada.

"Li was greeted at Jose Marti International Airport by First Vice President Miguel Diaz-Canel and other Cuban officials". The two countries "have already demonstrated progress on a range of issues", Trudeau said.

Nearly two years ago, Havana and Washington announced a detente after decades of hostility.

Beijing, meanwhile, just prior to Li's visit released a Canadian national held since 2014 on espionage charges.

Tory opposition leader Rona Ambrose linked the issue of extradition to concerns about Chinese hacking and a recent revelation that Chinese agents are active in Canada, while criticizing China as "a country whose justice system has one of the worst human rights records in the world".

A fresh border agreement between Canada and China would speed up the deportation of Chinese nationals found to be inadmissible in Canada, according to a Canadian government spokesman.

"We're also very pleased to announce that we've found a predictable, science-based, and stable solution to ensure access to the Chinese market by Canadian canola exporters through early 2020", Trudeau said.

China will support Cuba's industrialisation and start cooperation with it on infrastructure and industrial equipment.

Li is the first Chinese premier to visit Cuba.

Li also said China was lifting a ban on imports of bone-in beef less than 30 months old, a move that was immediately applauded by the Canadian Cattleman's Association as a $10-million annual gain.

When journalists asked him if it is possible that the visas will be lifted in a few weeks, the Romanian Prime Minister stated that he would let it to the Canadian Government to announce how they think this problem can be solved. Some critics in Washington have charged that Beijing is still manipulating its currency, although the U.S. Treasury says its assessment is that it is not undervalued.

"Given the contracting global market, Japan is competing with China for market share in Latin America and the Caribbean", Wang Chong said.

He said Cuba agrees with China on measures to develop bilateral ties and is willing to learn from China's development experience.

Abe met with former Cuban leader Fidel Castro on Thursday, and called for "a strong and unified worldwide response to North Korea's nuclear program", Reuters reported on Friday.

"Cuba is an extremely attractive investment destination for Japan".
