Don't buy Apple chargers on Amazon... they're probably fake

In the lawsuit, first reported by Patently Apple, Apple accuses a company called Mobile Star LLC of selling iPhone chargers through Amazon's "fulfilled by Amazon" program that appear, visually, to be legitimate Apple products. In other words, it's not only that consumers are paying a premium for a fake product, but those products could catch fire or deliver an electrical shock.

In this September 16, 2016, file photo, Lisa Gao, from Chicago, compares a new jet black iPhone 7, right, with her iPhone 6 at an Apple Store in Chicago. Apple says that almost 90% of the products it purchased weren't actually made by Apple AAPL and were instead counterfeit goods.

Lastly Mobile Star also supplied Groupon with hazardous counterfeit Apple power products.

The products in question were sold by Amazon directly and not by third-party vendors, but Apple says that the situation with independent sellers is even worse.

Although Apple did not target Amazon in the lawsuit - instead, Apple sued Mobile Star, a New York-based former supplier to Amazon - the retailer came off poorly in the complaint.

Because Mobile Star claims its products are genuine Apple accessories, this is obviously damaging to Apple's brand.

"When consumers encounter [Apple's trademarks] and decide to purchase goods and services identified by these marks, they expect to receive genuine Apple products that have been produced by Apple", the suit states.

If you see Apple power adapters, cable and syncing chargers that are too cheap to be true, then you're probably correct.

Apart from being fakes, the iPhone maker believes these products could lead to fires as they have in some cases and are a risk to the public.

Meanwhile, the products might be on sale still at Amazon, and because they're indistinguishable from the real thing, buyers should beware.

Counterfeit products are fairly easy to spot.

However, that's not the case for numerous accessories sold on Amazon - including those from Mobile Star - the lawsuit claims. Apple says its tests revealed them all to be fakes. The platform has released a statement clarifying that it has zero tolerance for the vending of such knock offs on its site and pursues wrongdoers aggressively.
