How Safe Are the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 Replacements?

According to The Verge, Southwest Airlines flight 994 from Louisville to Baltimore was evacuated on Wednesday during the boarding process after a smoked Note 7 was spotted.

The Verge also says it put the phone's serial number through Samsung's online tool to identify devices that need to be recalled and Green's phone was listed as not affected.

Samsung says it has recovered over 60 percent of its recalled Note 7 smartphones in South Korea and the US.

Samsung released the phone in August but issued a recall for about 2.5 million devices in early September after reports the defective battery was catching fire or exploding.

The handset, owned by Brian Green of New Albany, Indiana, reportedly filled the cabin with smoke at around 9.15am.

"Until we are able to retrieve the device, we can not confirm that this incident involves the new Note 7", the South Korean company said. With competitors' iPhone 7 and Google Pixel creating a buzz in the market, the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 has been left biting the dust. Once on board, he turned it off, and it was at that point that it began smoking-what he described as a "thick grey-green angry smoke"-and ultimately burned through the carpet". The company said in a statement in September that over half of Note 7 phones have already been replaced.

When asked about the incident, Samsung officials could not confirm to The AP that the Galaxy Note7 was involved in the incident, but they are working with local authorities to confirm the cause of the evacuation.

Some 60 percent of United States consumers had swapped their devices for replacements by the end of last month. There are some limitations to the permit, Samsung isn't allowed to fly the devices and must use a "quantity-limited, thermally insulated outer package created to contain fire or smoke".
