Another Miami neighborhood identified as Zika zone

The Florida Department of Health (DOH) reported Thursday on a new area in Miami-Dade County experiencing local transmission of the Zika virus.

It is the third Miami-area neighborhood identified where mosquitoes have transmitted the virus to people, after Wynwood and a touristy section of Miami Beach, which is still considered an active transmission zone. The department does not identify the locations of pregnant women who get infected. Miami-Dade County has the largest share of the state's burden, with more travel-related Zika infections than any other Florida county.

Pest control companies and Miami Dade County officials have been working overtime to combat the virus in the Miami area. The first Zika zone, which was in Miami's Wynwood neighborhood, was lifted last month. Of the five people, three live in the one-square-mile area and the other two either work in or have visited the area.

In clearing the Wynwood neighborhood of Zika, a combination of insecticides was needed to beat back the Aedes aegypti mosquito that carries the virus, state and health officials have said.

In announcing the new zone, Florida Gov. Rick Scott released a statement calling on the federal government to release additional funds to combat the disease.

In response, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued a travel warning advising against pregnant women traveling to these areas, and people living in the area should take steps to prevent mosquito bites.

This month there are almost 4,000 cases of Zika in the continental U.S. Zika poses a particular threat to pregnant woman due to its link with neurological disorders in unborn children. "It has been two weeks since federal funding to fight Zika was approved by Congress and signed by President Obama". It wasn't until after Zika arrived on the USA mainland, in the Wynwood and Miami-Dade areas of Florida, that Congress acted and allocated $1.1 billion in late September. "We don't need bureaucratic timelines - we need funding now", Scott stated.

Scott also lamented that the state had yet to see any federal funding after a long political fight over Zika.
