Nevada can't extend mail in voter registration

Rick Scott is refusing calls to move back the Sunshine State's October 11 registration deadline because of the fast-moving hurricane, which experts say could hurt Clinton in the key battleground state.

To register to vote, residents can visit the Lafayette County Supervisor of Elections Office or complete the form online at www.lafayettevotes.net and mail it into the office. Even if Scott gives in and does extend those deadlines, he could be sued on the basis that such an extension is illegal, because it usurps the power of the Florida legislature to set the rules for presidential elections. "On top of that, we've got lots of opportunities to vote: Early voting, absentee voting and Election Day. So I don't intend to make any changes".

Clinton's campaign manager, Robby Mook, called on Scott, a strong supporter of Republican nominee Donald Trump, to extend the registration past the October 11 limit, saying Hurricane Matthew's destruction could interfere with residents to register in time.

SC is among states where voter applications are accepted up to 30 days before an election. President Obama officially declared a state of emergency for Florida on Thursday.

Clinton's campaign has already received criticism in relation to the hurricane though, thanks to a report that her team opted to purchase $63,000 worth of advertising on The Weather Channel knowing the Florida voters would likely be tuned in looking for hurricane coverage, according to Politico.

Also in the path of the storm, the state announced it planned to provide voters more time beyond the October 8 deadline to return their voter registration applications.

Politico notes the "final days of voter registration in Florida often brings out more people who register as Democrats or who, though they register as no-party-affiliation voters, fit the profile of a Democratic voter". This would appear to give an edge to Clinton, as the Florida Supreme Court tends to lean moderate to liberal, and the United States Court of Appeals for the 11 Circuit has more Democratic-appointed judges.

Voter registration drives have been cancelled, including a radio station's plans in Miami, as well as weekend drives at "Florida International University and Miami Dade College, as well as at several high schools".

There's no doubt that, in addition to the effect the hurricane could have on the state of Florida, it could also have a huge impact on the election itself.

But Gov. Rick Scott wasn't really having it.
